A group of 4 undergraduate research students wanted to build a unified study to explore how essential oils would impact college student stress. Over the course of an academic year, each student developed a detailed understanding surrounding one plant and its essential oil. Together they built a unified, double blind experiment that worked to test established primary literature findings in aromatherapy on a unique population. These research students needed to develop key concepts in biology, chemistry, botany, psychology, and aromatherapy to execute the experience well. In addition, they cross-analyzed their data to test their independent and collective hypotheses. The overall experience provided an opportunity for deeper student learning and a stronger appreciation of cultural botanical uses while expanding the knowledge in aromatherapy.

The olive (Olea europaea) tree, cherished over millennia, and central to both ancient and modern cultures, has enriched humanity with its medicinal and culinary gifts while supporting healthy ecosystems. Today, climate change and a bacterium threaten olive trees, jeopardizing olive oil production. Rising olive oil adulteration compromises not only its culinary and health benefits, but also its value in aromatherapy, where purity is essential for therapeutic use. Advanced detection methods help ensure purity, yet vulnerabilities persist, highlighting the need for rigorous standards. Looking forward, it is crucial to support sustainable cultivation practices for the olive tree, alongside stronger regulations and a commitment to ethical sourcing. The future of this precious tree, and the numerous ecosystems and local communities it supports, depends on a shared commitment to preserving its cultural and environmental significance for future generations.
